Faith groups 'key' to fighting Ebola, says UN

Catholic Relief Services committed $1.5 million to its pre-existing programs in Sierra Leo ne, Liberia and Guinea, the three West African countries affected by widespread transmission of the Ebola virus. The money is being used a number of ways, including to train heath workers, ensure safe and dignified burials, and maintain local Catholic-run health care facilities.

VATICAN CITY - More co-operation is needed between the international community and faith leaders in stemming the ongoing Ebola epidemic, said a joint communique issued by the United Nations and the World Council of Churches.

Ebola frontlines still in Africa, not U.S.

Church workers say hunger and panic are major problems in Liberia and Sierra Leone as neighbourhoods are sealed off in an effort to curb the spread of ebola.

As the ebola death toll in West Africa surpassed 3,300, North American media were reporting a single, isolated case in Dallas with minute-by-minute, 24-hour coverage. For the Caritas network the focus is on Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone where fragile, underfunded health care systems are faced with daily deaths and new infections.
