OTTAWA - Archbishop Luigi Bonazzi has been appointed the new apostolic nuncio to Canada, the Vatican announced today.

Bonazzi, who is currently apostolic nuncio to Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia, replaces Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana, whose mission to Canada ended at the end of September.

The 65-year-old Bonazzi was born in Gazzaniga, Italy, and was ordained to the priesthood in June 1973 for the diocese of Bergamo. He has served in the Vatican's diplomatic corps since 1980, serving diplomatic missions in Cameroon, Trinidad and Tobago, Malta, Mozambique, the United States, Italy, Haiti and Cuba.

The date for Bonazzi's official instalment as nuncio has not been announced.
