Bob Carty

A voice for justice impossible to silence

OTTAWA - When I was a teen, Bob Carty asked me if I could drive his standard-transmission blue Corolla. “It’s a long way to Mexico,” he said, “and we’ll have to drive hard to get there as fast as the others going down by bus.”

So began an eye-opening journey — and a 40-year friendship — forged around solidarity with Latin America, love of music and a yearning for a faith that does justice.

After Bob’s death from cancer on Sept. 21, there was an amazing outpouring of stories, anecdotes and homage for Bob on CBC Radio, where he produced many documentaries. We all thought we’d have more time with him.
