Where are we?

Two years ago, my wife and I were in her mother’s room at an extended-care facility when we heard another patient calling out plaintively. I poked my head out the door in plenty of time to see Madame Beaudoin moving up the hallway with halting walker-steps, calling out: “Where am I?”

An attendant entered the tableau at the far end of the hall, encouraging Madame Beaudoin to keep going. “Come on,” the attendant called. “We have some nice breakfast waiting for you.”

Madame Beaudoin brought her walker to what might have been, in different circumstances, a screeching halt. Raising her head, she gave the attendant, all the way down the hallway, a wise look.
