Cardinal Turkson to head pontifical academies of sciences, social sciences

Pope Francis has named Cardinal Peter Turkson chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. Cardinal Turkson, pictured in a Feb. 11, 2022, photo, succeeds Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, who will be 80 in September.

Pope Francis has named Cardinal Peter Turkson the new chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, two groups of top-level scholars and experts who promote studies on issues of concern to the Vatican.

Vatican II's Bible promotion said to create vitality in church life

Cardinal Turkson was at the university to attend the eighth annual International Conference on Catholic Social Thought: Renewing Mission and Identity in Catholic Business Education.

NEW YORK - In the 50 years since the Second Vatican Council encouraged Catholics to read, reflect and act on Scripture, there has been a "surging vitality in the life of the church," according to Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

"There is nothing that the church does that is not rooted in Scripture," he told participants at the New York Catholic Bible Summit June 16.
