Cardinal Francis Leo has been appointed a member of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Legislative Texts.

Pope Francis named Toronto’s Archbishop to the role Jan. 11, a month following Leo’s elevation to the College of Cardinals. Besides their responsibilities as members of the College of Cardinals, each cardinal holds additional responsibilities and appointments within the Holy See’s governance structure.

The Dicastery for Legislative Texts promotes understanding and application of canon law within the Catholic Church. Its primary responsibilities include assisting the Pope, curial institutions and bishops in the correct interpretation and application of Church laws in the Latin and Eastern Churches. It verifies any need to update current legislation and suggests amendments to ensure effectiveness of the law and assists curial institutions in preparing general executive decrees, instructions and other texts to make sure they conform with current universal law.

The dicastery is headed by Italian Archbishop Filippo Iannone, O. Carm. Among its members is fellow Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Archbishop Emeritus of Quebec.

A version of this story appeared in the January 26, 2025, issue of The Catholic Register with the headline "Cardinal named to Vatican’s Dicastery for Legislative Texts".
