Fr. Charles Duval, C.Ss.R., has been named Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Grouard-McLennan in northwestern Alberta.
Pope Francis announced the appointment Feb. 14. Duval, the current pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Grande Prairie, Alta., will assist Archbishop Gerald Pettipas, C.Ss.R., and succeed him upon the Pope accepting his retirement (diocesan bishops are required to submit their resignation at age 75).
Duval is a native of Hull, Que. (now Gatineau), and turns 61 in April. He is a member of the Redemptorist order and made his first vows in 1986 and his perpetual profession in 1989.
Duval has served in various pastoral, missionary and leadership roles across the country, including director of the Redemptorist Youth Mission Team.
The archdiocese has 22 diocesan priests, 18 priests who are members of consecrated life and societies of apostolic life, three women in consecrated life, two permanent deacons and three pastoral agents serving a Catholic population of almost 50,000 in 57 parishes and missions.
A version of this story appeared in the February 23, 2025, issue of The Catholic Register with the headline "Coadjutor archbishop named for Grouard-McLennan".
