Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew used the Manitoba Multi-faith Council’s annual leadership breakfast to tell faith leaders he wants to change the prayer recited in the legislature to make it more inclusive.
The current prayer, while not overtly Christian, has references to God and ends with “Amen.”
While insisting the prayer still has a place in the legislature, Kinew invited faith leaders to rethink the words which the Speaker of the House recites at the start of every session
Any change will require consensus of other parties and any decision is in the hands of the legislature’s rules committee
The current prayer dates back to 1937 and has had only minor changes since.
