Lectio divina series inspires archbishop’s new book

TORONTO - Toronto Archbishop Thomas Collins’s monthly lectio divina sessions have provided the inspiration for his new book, Pathway to our Hearts: A Simple Approach to Lectio Divina with the Sermon on the Mount.

The archbishop started lectio divina when he was the archbishop of Edmonton because he thought it was important for bishops to speak the Word of God to the people. Collins continued these sessions when he came to Toronto, and he runs lectio divina monthly at St. Michael’s Cathedral.

An audience of about 50 people was on hand for the launch of the book at the Catholic Pastoral Centre March 11.

In the book, Collins give readers detailed instructions on how to practice lectio divina, along with his own meditations on verses from the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew. Taken from the monthly talks, the book is based on sessions from 2007 and 2008. These form nine of the 10 chapters, while the first is an essay Collins wrote describing lectio divina.

Collins said he picked the Sermon on the Mount as his first session when he came to Toronto because it serves as a map for our lives.

“He really lays out how we are to live our lives and that’s a good thing to meditate upon,” he said at the launch as he conducted an interview with Salt+Light Television.

The title of the book comes from an ancient saying in one of the proverbs of the Church: “We need to let the word of God come into our hearts and we need to build a pathway to our hearts.”

“And we do that through leading a repentant life.”
