Chaldeans take big step into global spotlight with new cardinal

Chaldean Patriarch of Babylon Louis Raphael Sako was one of 14 new cardinals appointed by Pope Francis last month.

Roman Catholics are used to belonging to a global church, one that transcends borders, encompasses cultures and finds expression in all the languages of the world.

Chaldean Bishop Biwai Soro is on a new world mission

Bishop Biwai Soro is the new leader of Canada's Chaldean Catholic community, which has grown in recent years because of the refugee Christians fleeing ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
Chaldean Bishop Biwai Soro had been a priest and pastor for more than a decade when he stumbled on a simpler, more basic understanding of priesthood.

Bishop Biwai Soro welcomed as head of Canada’s Chaldean Catholics

“It is my dream that the Chaldeans in North America become a solid unit,” Bishop Biwai Soro said to cheers and a standing ovation from an overflowing church on Nov. 29. The service was presided over by the head of the Chaldean Catholic Church, Patriarch of Babylon Rafaël Louis Sako.
Canada’s newest bishop has taken his seat at the Good Shepherd Chaldean Cathedral in Toronto and declared his dream for Canada’s Iraqi Catholics.
