Delete ‘barbarians’

  • May 10, 2024

I was shocked by the headline on the April 21 issue of The Catholic Register.

The accompanying article is fairly balanced, and comments by Mary Ellen O’Connell emphasize the law and morality of waging war (if a “just war” is even possible today). However, so much coverage fails to provide context for Palestinian anger: Israel consistently disregarding UN resolutions regarding treatment of Palestinians, occupying Gaza and the West Bank since 1967, and continuing to construct Israeli settlements in occupied territory. To repeat the phrase “barbarians” used by Netanyahu only perpetuates the lie and exacerbates tensions. My hope is a Catholic newspaper would try to build peace, justice and communities based on Gospel values.
