Pope Francis has landed in Canada and begun the work of his penitential pilgrimage from the moment he was wheeled off the papal plane and into a hangar at Edmonton International Airport.

A smiling, jovial Pope Francis greeted journalists on the plane to Edmonton, but first reminded them of the penitential nature of his pilgrimage to Canada.

Standing at the brink of history, it is impossible not to wonder what’s on the other side. Pope Francis’ six-day penitential pilgrimage through Canada will certainly be historic. There has never been a papal journey like this. But there’s more to it that just originality.

When busloads of residential school survivors, elders, knowledge keepers and youth descend on Edmonton and Quebec City to be present as Pope Francis walks on his “penitential pilgrimage,” Cynthia Bunn will be among them. But she didn’t want to be.

Pope Francis' July trip to Canada was born out of his meetings with the nations' Indigenous people and was planned around encounters with them, and if the pope's words "have value elsewhere," like throughout the Americas, all the better, said the director of the Vatican press office.
