Pope recognizes martyrdom of Franciscans killed in Guatemala

The Franciscans recognized by Pope Francis were martyred several weeks before Father Stanley Rother, a priest of the Oklahoma City Archdiocese. He was murdered in 1981 in the Guatemalan village where he ministered, is shown baptizing a child in this undated photo. The Archdiocese of Oklahoma City beatified Blessed Fr. Rother on Sept. 23 in Oklahoma.
VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis advanced the sainthood causes of nine men and women, including a Franciscan priest who championed the land rights of farmers in Guatemala.
