Northern B.C. residents 'broken' as wildfire ravages homes, church

Lightning sparked a wildfire northwest of Telegraph Creek in the northern part of the province Aug. 1, and a local state of emergency was declared three days later. All 300 residents of Telegraph Creek were told to evacuate Aug. 5, and they fled to Dease Lake and nearby communities.
VANCOUVER – Catholics in the Diocese of Whitehorse, Yukon, sought assistance after a devastating wildfire in Telegraph Creek, British Columbia, destroyed a mission church, rectory and homes.

New Canadians are keeping the Catholic faith alive

Nearly half (49 per cent) of immigrants surveyed by Angus Reid on behalf of the Christian think-tank Cardus said their faith community gave them material assistance when they first arrived in Canada, including help finding a job, finding a place to live and learning English. Nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) said their faith community provided them with a vital social network.

Anyone who has stepped inside a church in the last 40 years doesn’t need a nationwide poll to tell them that the most religious Canadians are the newest Canadians. Immigrants are driving the bus for almost every faith community in Canada, but none more-so than Catholics.
