Exhibit showcases L’Arche artists

Biologically speaking, we can sustain life without art, but it wouldn’t be a very human life. L’Arche is all about sustaining and celebrating a fully human life, which makes the April art exhibition at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts so important, said Colette Halferty.

Halferty is part of the team at L’Arche Daybreak putting on With Our Own Hands, an art exhibition featuring the work of L’Arche core members and other artists who participate in L’Arche day programs.

Sania Ahmed is one of the artists featured in the show. Though she doesn’t live at L’Arche she comes regularly to the Richmond Hill community to paint and draw at the L’Arche craft studio. Her favourite subjects come from nature and she loves to juxtapose colours to discover how they make her feel.

The gallery show is important to Ahmed because it’s an opportunity for people to see what she does.

“Because I make them,” she said.

It’s a chance for people to “see beyond the disability and see the artist there,” said Halferty.

Though the paintings will be on the walls at beginning of the month, a reception for the artists will take place Tuesday, April 10, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the theatre lobby, 10268 Yonge Street in downtown Richmond Hill.

The art exhibition sets the table for a With Our Hands gala and show at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts Tuesday, May 8, 7:30 p.m.

The gala will feature creativity from L’Arche’s Sprit Movers dance troupe, items made at L’Arche’s Woodery and theatre from the L’Arche-based Movers and Shakers company.
