The lifetime achievement award was announced at a banquet June 21 in Indianapolis at the Catholic Media Conference. Dozens of Gabriels winners in film, television and radio, and Spanish-language media also were announced that evening.
At a luncheon the next day, Frank Morock, president of the Catholic Academy, received the President's Medallion from academy members. Morock is director of communications for the Diocese of Raleigh, N.C., and hosts the diocese's weekly television program "Catholic Perspective."
Among the winners of the Gabriels were CatholicTV in the Archdiocese of Boston and EWTN Global Catholic Network based in Irondale, Ala., who shared the Religious TV Station of the Year.
The Gabriels' Secular Television Station of the Year was WCVB in Boston, with WBRC in Birmingham, Ala., winning a certificate of merit. WBVM-FM in Tampa, Fla., won the Gabriels' Religious Radio Station of the Year prize.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and its TV, radio and French-language affiliates took nine prizes at this year's Gabriels, the 47th annual awards.
Film winners were "The Mighty Macs" in the family film category, "The Way" in the drama category, and "The Last Mountain" in the documentary category.
