Pope urges dialogue to end Georgian-Russian territorial stalemate

Pope Francis attends a meeting at the Georgian presidential palace in Tbilisi, Georgia, Sept. 30. The Pope, on his first day in the Caucasus region, urged dialogue between Georgia and Russia to end territorial stalemate.

TBILISI, Georgia – Subtly acknowledging Georgia's ongoing territorial dispute with Russia, Pope Francis urged greater efforts to sow peace throughout the Caucasus region.

Pope Francis heading east on Caucasus peacemaking mission

Pope Francis greets pilgrims as he arrives for his weekly audience Sept. 21 in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican. The Pope will be visiting the countries of Georgia and Azerbaijan between Sept. 30–Oct. 2, focusing on the themes of peace and reconciliation.

VATICAN CITY – Peace and reconciliation will be the focus of Pope Francis’ first official visit to the nations of Georgia and Azerbaijan later this week.
