Trial begins for ex-Vatican officials accused of stealing hospital funds

The Vatican said that its prosecutor is investigating two former officials of a Vatican-owned children's hospital over renovations at the penthouse apartment of the city-state's former secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. The Vatican statement confirmed a report in Espresso magazine that Giuseppe Profiti, the Bambino Gesu hospital's former president, and Massimo Spina, its ex-treasurer, were under investigation.

VATICAN CITY – Two former top Vatican hospital officials appeared before a Vatican court for a pretrial hearing on allegations of embezzlement.

Former president, treasurer of Pope’s hospital charged with misuse of funds

The Vatican announced that former president, Giuseppe Profiti, and former treasurer, Massimo Spina of its Bambino Gesu Children's Hospital have been charged with the illicit use of hospital funds.

VATICAN CITY – The Vatican announced Thursday (July 13) that an investigation involving the former president and treasurer of the Vatican-owned Bambino Gesù hospital in Rome will proceed to trial before the Vatican court.
