Hall of Fame basketball coach Kundla began career with Catholic schools

John Kundla, in suit, a longtime parishioner of St. Austin Church in Minneapolis, is pictured in an undated photo. Kundla, a basketball Hall of Famer, died July 23 at age 101. He started his coaching career at Ascension Catholic School, where he also taught, after graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1939.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Before John Kundla, who died July 23 at 101, became a Hall of Fame basketball coach with the Minneapolis Lakers, he started his career with Catholic schools.
