Doomsday clock ticking on nuclear threat

The Atomic Scientists’ Doomsday Clock reads two minutes to midnight. Anti-nuclear voices include the 122 nations who endorsed a United Nations treaty last July to classify nuclear weapons as illegal, indiscriminate weapons of mass destruction.

Lithuanian archbishop says citizens tense over Russian military buildup

WARSAW, Poland – Lithuanian Archbishop Gintaras Grusas said citizens are anxious about military threats from neighbouring Russia but said support from Europe and the United States helped calm those fears.

Lithuanian archbishop worried Russia will move against Baltic states

Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimated Aug. 15 that 155,800 Ukrainians had been displaced by fighting, more than 2,000 people had been killed since mid-April and another 5,000 had been injured.

WARSAW, Poland - A top Baltic church leader voiced concern about possible Russian aggression against Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, and appealed to Western Catholics to be better informed about the situation.

NATO summit, protests provide some lessons for Catholic school students

Security measures are high as thousands of protesters plan demonstrations and rallies. Many Chicago businesses in the downtown area, as well as some Catholic schools, planned to close while the summit was under way.

CHICAGO - With world leaders descending on Chicago for the May 20-21 NATO summit, some Catholic school teachers were incorporating lessons about the political-military alliance for their students.

And with thousands of people coming to the city to demonstrate and draw attention to focus on issues ranging from war to the environment to poverty, they included a lesson or two about the history of protests, too.

"Since the time of Christ, people have been protesting," said Mary Lee Calihan, principal of Old St. Mary's School. "What's a useful form of protest? What have people done? What has been effective?"
