Gunmen take Catholic hostages; Philippines' Duterte imposes martial law

Philippine government troops stand guard May 24 at a checkpoint along a main highway in Lanao del Norte province. Residents started to evacuate the town of Marawi after President Rodrigo Duterte imposed martial law across the entire Muslim-majority region of Mindanao.

MANILA, Philippines – Gunmen claiming to have links with the Islamic State group threatened to kill hostages, including a Catholic priest, who were taken from the southern Philippine city of Marawi May 23.

Mother of one of 43 “disappeared” Mexican students testifies on Hill

Demonstrators rally outside St. Anne's Catholic Church in Detroit to protest the September 2014 disappearance of 43 students from a teachers college in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero. The students from Ayotzinapa Teacher Training College were app arently arrested by local police who handed them over to a drug gang.

OTTAWA - A Mexican group that includes the mother of one of 43 students who disappeared from a teacher-training college in Ayotzinapa, Mexico, is asking Canada to take Mexico off its list of safe countries.

Pakistani Catholic official calls attack on school 'barbaric, inhuman'

NEW DELHI - The Catholic Church in Pakistan has joined the chorus of condemnation of the deadly attack by Taliban on an army school in Peshawar that has left at least 126 children and others dead and 250 injured.
