Pope expresses shock over cruelty waged against innocent Iraqis

Iraqi refugees that fled violence in Mosul and internally displaced Syrians who fled Islamic State controlled areas in Deir el-Zour buy food and water at the Syrian border near Hassakeh.

VATICAN CITY – As a military operation in northern Iraq fights to wrest control of areas held by retaliating Islamic State forces, Pope Francis criticized the "cruelty" and heinous violence waged against innocent civilians.

Once Iraq recaptures Mosul, people will still need help, says archbishop

Peshmerga forces advance Oct. 18 to attack Islamic State militants in Mosul, Iraq. This summer, the U.N. said that as the Mosul crisis evolves, up to 13 million people throughout Iraq may need humanitarian aid by the year's end, far larger than the Syrian crisis.

WASHINGTON – The military operation to liberate the Iraqi city of Mosul from the Islamic State group is not the only solution needed to get life back to normal, said Iraqi Archbishop Bashar Warda of Irbil.
