“Youth Speak News was a great help for me in my studies towards becoming a journalist,” said Andre-Joseph Cordeiro, a Montreal-based member from last year’s team. “Even though we were all at different stages when we began, the program helped to mold and shape us, in our thoughts and words, as well as our techniques in writing, interviewing, photographing, etc.”
After the year’s term ends in May, the team is invited to spend a weekend in Toronto to take part in professional media workshops offered by The Catholic Register and Salt + Light Television and to meet face to face with the other correspondents.
For the 2009-2010 year, our writers hail from British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and include journalism students, high school students with a strong interest in media and other young writers with related experience.
“For me, writing for Catholic media means that I can be a part of the constructive voice in a person’s life,” said Ann Chazhoor, a Brampton, Ont., writer. “My family and my youth group, Jesus Youth, have always been a source of guidance and light whenever I was lost or anxious and I hope to bring the same kind of guidance and light in a world that is so often clouded with confusion and havoc.”
Columns and stories from our new group will begin appearing in the Sept. 27 issue.
