Comic book teaches about Christ

Behind cartoon-like imagery, a fair bit about Christianity can be learned from a comic book.

Jesus Christ is a short comic in independent publisher Bluewater Productions’ faith series and is available as an e-book on iTunes.

Bluewater Productions produces comics that focus on particular individuals that vary from pop stars such as Justin Bieber to various presidents of the United States.

The Jesus comic works like a biography covering the life of Christ, especially the latter parts of His life as revealed in the New Testament. The comic provides the reader a rather basic understanding of Jesus’ life, beginning with the stories of the book of Genesis and the Garden of Eden. After going through the theological back-story for original sin, the comic touches on the story of Jesus’ time in the desert for 40 days — the original Lent with various forms of temptation by the devil.

The story moves along to cover the parable of the three servants given talents, the raising of Lazarus and the tale of Jesus remarking on the need of child-like faith to enter the kingdom of heaven. Then the comic covers various aspects of the crucifixion.

The writing by Don Smith features simple language and is a refreshing way to enjoy Bible stories told in a visual format. This isn’t writing on par with a graphic novel spanning at least a hundred pages, but is an uncomplicated strip that spans about 20 pages.

Visually simple as well, keeping in line with the messages being brought to the forefront, the comic is aimed at younger children or perhaps those too intimidated by a Bible when looking for the meaning behind the death of Christ.

There’s no superfluous worded visualizations of actions everywhere and the focus of the comic is to present a simple interpretation regarding Christ’s teachings — this is not an in depth graphic novel that would delve into every biographical record of a character, but it’s a comic that can teach those without a knowledge of Christ a basic outline, while providing a pleasant experience for the reader.
