But in the end, the judges identified three prize winners and selected several runners-up, whose artwork we’re proud to display on these two colourful pages. The top entry in each of the three categories will receive a $100 gift certificate for books, art or religious items from our contest sponsor, DiCarlo Religious Supply Centre Inc.
In the Grades 1-3 category, Abriana Chase of Windsor, Ont., took first place. The Grade 3 student at Our Lady of Mount Carmel impressed the judges with a painting that used vibrant colours to display Christ rising from the tomb.
In the Grades 4-6 category, the winner is Belové Da Silva of Toronto, a Grade 4 student from St. Timothy’s Catholic School. Her detailed drawing of Jesus risen from the tomb included the two Marys in a way that beautifully depicts the joy of Easter.
In the Grades 7-8 category, top prize goes to Grade 8 student Carl Caliva of Toronto. His stark rendering of the Resurrection incorporated elements of Calvary with the tomb and silhouettes of the two Marys in a juxtaposition that caught the attention the judges.
Students were asked to submit an original colour drawing that illustrated some aspect of the Resurrection on Easter morning. The objective was to encourage children to focus on the spiritual message of Easter, which meant no illustrations of Easter bunnies or coloured eggs.
To all who participated, thank you, and to the winners our congratulations.
