Sport meets spirituality on the court

TORONTO - Former Ryerson University head volleyball coach Dion Rugosi is inviting young adults to combine sport and spirituality.

Volleyball and Virtues is targetting young adults age 18 to 39 as part of Rugosi’s Be a Champion Today initiative.

Be a Champion Today began two years ago with free volleyball training and games for youth, said Rugosi. The aim is to help bring out the good in youth.

“As a father of five children... I hope that my children meet friends, are meeting good people, having good fun and doing good deeds. So that’s one of the slogans: good people, good fun, good deeds,” he said.

Young adults can join in recreationally or competitively, individually or as a team, for free on Tuesdays at Loretto College and Thursdays at Stella Maris School. The first event was held on April 30, with the next recreational volleyball event scheduled for May 14. Competitive volleyball will be held on May 7 and 14.

On each date, the night will end with a request to commit a virtuous act.

“The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that a virtue is a habitual and a firm disposition to good.

It allows a person to perform good acts,” said Rugosi.

Participants may be asked to commit a random act of kindness, complete the most important tasks first, practise forgiveness rooted in love and to be the best they can be as a gift to themselves, their family and to glorify God.

Rugosi remains inspired by St. Escrive on what being a champion today means.

“Today try your best and if you fail keep trying and begin again. Our God is a God of new beginnings,” he said.

Rugosi plans on expanding Volleyball and Virtues into different sports and activities, especially for those who don’t play sports. He’s also organizing a eucharistic adoration for young adults.

To register, call Rugosi in advance at (416) 654-3344 or e-mail drugosi@gmail.com.
