Former Charlottetown bishop passes away at 71

CHARLOTTETOWN - Bishop J. Vernon Fougere, the former bishop of the Prince Edward Island diocese of Charlottetown, passed away in a Charlottetown hospital June 18. He was 71.

Bishop Fougere served as bishop of the diocese for 17 years, stepping down in 2009 due to health reasons.

Ordained a priest in 1969, Bishop Fougere had served as a priest for the diocese of Antigonish until his elevation to bishop on Dec. 11, 1991. He was ordained bishop of Charlottetown on March 19 the following year.

During his tenure as bishop, he served as a member and chair of the former Commission for Social Communications of the English Sector of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, as well as a member of the Commission for Christian Education.

Bishop Fougere was a delegate on the national council of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace and the CCCB representative with the National Catholic Broadcasting Council.

Bishop Fougere’s funeral was held at Charlottetown’s St. Dunstan’s Cathedral Basilica on June 21.
