Working wonders, underground

{mosimage}TORONTO - Dozens of Catholic high school students from across the GTA will be lending a hand this month, trying to raise money for the 2009 ShareLife campaign.

On March 25, more than 50 students from four Toronto-area schools will head underground with a simple message for rush-hour commuters on Toronto’s subway system — You can work wonders. The message conveys a simple truth: every donation makes a difference.

It is the second straight year ShareLife has gone track-level to raise awareness and garner support for its fund-raising campaign, and representatives are optimistic. After a successful TTC day in 2008, student campaign co-ordinator Tim Lee-Loy said ShareLife is eager to tap the tunnels again.

Students will be situated at four high-traffic stations along the TTC subway route armed with snappy slogans and smiles, he said.

With more student volunteers at more stops along the subway than last year, Lee-Loy said he is hopeful the fund-raising pot will exceed last year’s total of $1,800 — most of it received in coins.

He said ShareLife really appreciates the help from students.

“It’s not just a monetary donation. They’re donating their time and themselves,” said Lee-Loy. “For that we are always grateful.”

Maria Pereira, the principal at Toronto’s Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School, one of the schools involved, said she is happy her students are participating in the fund-raising event.

“I endorse anything the students get involved with, as long as it’s for a good cause.”
