MONTREAL - In a letter addressed to the Canadian bishops and the leaders of Development and Peace, prominent leaders of the Catholic Church in the Philippines and civil organizations criticized a moratorium on at least four Philippine associations suspected of "violating the social teachings of the Church."

Longueuil diocese takes on cathedral’s $300,000 debt

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., has been taken over by the Doicese of Longueuil, which has also assumed the cathedral’s debt from renovations it could no longer afford.

The future of an historic cathedral in Quebec has been secured by a transaction that saw the local bishop trade away a former convent and his diocese assume the cathedral’s $300,000 debt.

Four Canadian bishops selected for 2018 Youth Synod

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) have elected four bishops — two English and two French — to represent the Canadian Church at the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod.

Bishops ponder liability if Pope apologizes in Canada

Bishop Lionel Gendron, president of the CCCB, said some bishops are concerned the Pope could be sued if he were to apologize in Canada for the Church’s role in residential schools.
There may be good reasons for not inviting the Pope to Canada, but the risk of being sued isn’t one of them, said a litigation lawyer who has taken the Church to court.

JERUSALEM - From a new playground at the Catholic parish in Gaza to transitional housing provided by a U.S. agency, visiting bishops from three continents said they saw signs of hope and resilience amid the continuing poverty and destruction in the Gaza Strip.
