Canoe pilgrimage is riding the wave of reconciliation

A couple of the crews engaged in a playful mini-race as the Canadian Canoe Pilgrimage got underway July 21 in Midland, Ont., the start of a 900 km journey.

The path to reconciliation between Canada and its First Nations’ people will ultimately be a long journey. Too large of a schism has developed among the two cultures over 400 years, with the newcomers overwhelming the founding nations.

Canoe pilgrimage a journey of reconciliation

Andrew Starblanket, Krista Bowman and Erik Sorensen, will be part of a First Nations, Jesuit and laity group retracing the historic canoe route of St. Jean de Brebeuf from Midland, Ont., to Montreal.

The journey toward Truth and Reconciliation takes many forms, but few will be as physically demanding as a history matching canoe trip planned for next summer.
