Happy birthday! Full funding 35 years old
Thirty-five years ago, in July 1985, Catholic education in Ontario took a major step forward when Bill 30 was passed by the Ontario Legislature, granting full public funding to Catholic schools through Grade 13. The battle for equal funding with the public boards was a long one, finally won when Premier Bill Davis, who had rejected the idea in 1971, announced the change in policy in June 1984. Here’s The Catholic Register’s report from its June 23, 1984 edition:
Catholic educators in Saskatchewan are “cautiously optimistic” that two days of hearings in a Regina courtroom will lead to the overturning of a 2017 ruling that threatened the existence of Catholic schools in the province.
Anti-bullying strategies take different paths
The city of North Tonawanda, N.Y., thinks yes. Located 24 km north of Buffalo, North Tonawanda passed a law in October stating parents could be sentenced to 15 days in jail if their child violates a city law, including bullying, twice in a 90-day period.
TORONTO – Ontario's largest Catholic school board expects a huge increase in funding for renewal projects over the next two years following an injection of capital from the provincial government.
