Sisters of Providence closing doors on its Printing Room museum

The Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul ran a printing operation in Kingston for over 90 years and turned it into a museum after closing it in 1989.

Figure of speech: Restored water tower is an oasis of healing

The water tower at St. Mary’s University has been restored (right) to its former glory.

Thanks to generous donors, St. Mary’s University in Calgary was recently able to complete the restoration of our nearly 100-year-old water tower. Built by the Sisters of Providence in 1921, the tower has stood over the Midnapore site for nearly a century, its fortunes waxing and waning — mostly waning — over time.

Poverty vigil runs its course

Members and supporters of Kingston, Ont.’s Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul on vigil outside Kingston City Hall. The sisters will be bringing the vigil to an end Sept. 17.

For 20 years, the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul have lined a small corner in front of Kingston’s City Hall to stand in solidarity with the poor and vulnerable in society.

Put a price on carbon to fight climate change, religious investors tell finance minister

Fifty-three religious groups have signed a letter urging the Canadian government to take a stronger stance on climate change by adopting policies like a national carbon tax or a cap and trade policy.

Kingston MPP John Gerretsen walks a mile in poor’s shoes

The Sisters of Providence in Kingston, Ont., are hopeful there may be more “food in the budget” some day soon after a positive response from local MPP and Attorney General John Gerretsen to an organized “food tour” of the eastern Ontario city.

Tara Kainer, social justice advocate with the Sisters of Providence, planned the event for the MPP for Kingston and the Islands so Gerretsen could “spend a few hours in the shoes of someone on social assistance, to see what it’s like.”
