Climate change caught in political battle over carbon tax

Conservative leader Andrew Scheer has promised to rescind the controversial Liberal carbon tax that went into effect on Jan. 1 for industry and will apply April 1 on consumer goods such as gasoline and home heating fuels.

OTTAWA – Climate politics are shaping up as a federal election issue in a partisan scenario cautioned against by Pope Francis in Laudato Si’, his 2015 encyclical on the environment.

A spokesman for Ontario Environment Minister Glen Murray says it is easier to implement a carbon tax, but a cap-and-trade system is more effective.

The Ontario government is steaming ahead with a cap-and-trade system to reduce greenhouse gasses despite a clear warning from Pope Francis about buying and selling “carbon credits.”

Put a price on carbon to fight climate change, religious investors tell finance minister

Fifty-three religious groups have signed a letter urging the Canadian government to take a stronger stance on climate change by adopting policies like a national carbon tax or a cap and trade policy.

OTTAWA - Religious congregations and faith groups from across Canada have urged Canada’s finance minister to put a price on carbon emissions to combat climate change.
