The Vatican’s suggestion that investors dump fossil fuel stocks may be one way to protect the planet, but the strategy is not as easy as it appears.

VATICAN – The world needs a new kind of leadership that believes in building up the whole human family and protecting the environment, Pope Francis told a group of energy and oil executives and global investors.

A large Canadian Catholic institution, at least one major international religious order, plus a large diocese and a host of other Catholic entities will stand up on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi to declare they’re selling off all their stocks and other investments in oil, gas and coal, according to the Washington-based Global Catholic Climate Movement.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Large-scale mining and extractive operations are failing to deliver economic benefits while causing environmental damage and human suffering throughout Latin America, said a coalition of church organizations and environmental groups.

OTTAWA – The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace is urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to heed a letter from more than 160 Latin American organizations that has raised concerns about the operations of Canadian mining companies abroad.
