Faith and hope can help renew our relationship with God

The sawed-off four-metre wooden crucifix was carefully lowered to the ground at the entrance to the cemetery.

The fibreglass Christ figure that hung from the cross was chipped and faded and in dire need of a cosmetic refit. The fibreglass coating that encased the wooden cross, too, needed an overhaul.

So, there we were on a mid- August day, three parishioners working with a chainsaw, a hacksaw, a hammer and a chisel to gently ease the giant crucifix to the ground and to strip the Christ figure from the cross.
