In the midst of the thoughtful days of Advent and with the glory of Christmas just ahead, Christians may not yet be looking toward their new year in the Church and in the world. But when January arrives many of us will consider “New Year’s resolutions” involving losing a little weight, getting to the gym more often, doing projects around the house and perhaps considering volunteer work.

TORONTO - The long hours thousands upon thousands of volunteers spend repacking food and stocking shelves in their parish food banks aren’t solving the problem of hunger, claims a union-and-Church-backed campaign demanding governments raise social assistance and minimum wage rates.

One of the many benefits of service volunteer trips is professional growth, said Friar Rick Riccioli, director of Francis Corps, a Catholic organization that places volunteers in Syracuse, New York, and Costa Rica.

Every year, thousands of high school and university students make the trek to different volunteering opportunities overseas — or across the border — to donate their time and services to those in need.

“We had one young woman who wanted to be a surgeon and then decided to go into public health because (she saw) the need for policy,” Riccioli said.
